This is a new ad for L'Oreal. They certainly have a knack for bringing out the "whiteness" in Beyonce. This photo has been causing a lot of uproar and drama in various media-circles over the fact that she is so light and eurocentric-looking in this ad. Personally, I think she just has eurocentric features anyway, but I do have to admit, they did over-do it with the lightening... When asked, Jay-Z told TMZ that it's something they laugh at. They don't take things like this seriously. I guess they have bigger fish to fry, but I wish someone would take issue. Black is beautiful too...Right???

Its ridiculous for them to make her that light. They make Kerri Washington and Queen Latifah look much lighter too. In a day and age where African American women don't have but so many icons to look to for beuaty inspiration, its a shame for Beyonce and others to allow (YES ALLOW!) them to make her look that way. That girl doesnt look like that! She is actually much much prettier/more stunning than she looks in that picture. I hate to say it, but in this photo she looks like ur average, typical, nondescript White woman. Its tricks like a darker color powder here, and a lighter color here that make the nose, eyes, and cheekbones look narrow-er and sharper and more European. I think its the make-up artists as well who don't think about african american female shapes features...Its probably not even taught in those Empire classes. Case in point: go in the MAC store and see all those women with the wrong color blush on...
ReplyDeleteBut hey, if our icons, the ones who can make their voices heard (can anyone remember the last time they drank Cristal?), don't stand up to the way the media does Black folks, then who the hell am I?
Ok Sistahgurl! Thank u for ur very insightful comment.. I completely agree. Society has no room for thi nonsense. We have enough issue because of our torn ancestry, finding the confidence in ourselves. This effects us psychologically, and it's a big deal.
ReplyDeleteIts' not that serious like Jay-Z said.. They laugh at it.. It had to be someone who has a self-esteem issue to bring this up. If the Singer is fine with it and she has no cpmplaints then everyone else needs to "STEP OFF". Stop tripping she is secure with SELF. All other's should be as well. Damn it was just the camera lighting.
