The New York Public Library has a new exhibition up called: "Not A Cough In A Carload: Images Used by Tobacco Companies to Hide The Dangers Of Smoking". Some of these ads are simply horrendous. The way they use "doctors" and babies to co-sign the use of cigarettes is appalling! Most of these ads ran in the late 1940's, and thank GOODNESS that the FDA made the SURGEON GENERAL WARNING that we see on all cigarette packs now, mandatory. A friend of mine told me that her own grandmother thought that smoking cigs was doing her justice-- she had no clue of the dangers that the cancer-sticks cause. Check this out:
A new exhibition hosted by The New York Public Library examines the historic advertisements in which tobacco companies claimed that smoking provided a range of health benefits, including the ability to calm nerves, boost energy and aid in weight loss.
Word, Mr. Big-Time-Tobacco-Company? So this is how we are trying to remain relevant? SMH. If you are in the NYC area, and would like to check out this exhibit, you can find more information on: www.nypl.com!
